How Low Can You Go?

Can a man intentionally sound better?

I’VE NOTICED SOMETHING unintentional in my behavior. Something instinctual and raw, something that might hark back to cave man days. When I run into a good looking woman — and it doesn’t really matter where, could be in the check out line at a grocery store, at Starbucks, at a barbecue, or chance encounter — I’m surprised to hear my voice deepen.

I don’t necessarily talk to every hot chick that walks by, but you know what I mean — sometimes there’s these little meaningless conversations, a contextual joke, whatever. And despite the fact that I’m not actively on the prowl, my voice will tend to drop down to a deeper level. It’s not overly obvious, and I’m not sure that even the women in my life would notice, but I’ve noticed.

WTF?

Obviously, there’s something going on here. It’s not hard to assume that deeper voices sound more manly, and sounding manly is more likely to appeal to women, and appealing to women means you’re more likely to spend quality time with them, and spending quality time means you’re more likely to spread your DNA.

So, yeah, I get that. I’m guessing that’s correct, anyway, I don’t have any specific evidence that points to it. But I’ve seen enough anecdotal evidence in my life to believe it. We’ve all heard a rich deep voice, and we can appreciate it. At the same time, how often have you heard a chirpy little voice come from a man . . . and you made some instant assumptions?

A few years ago, I was out with a pair of young ladies — mid-twenties — who were Johnny Cash fans. Why? His voice. Sure, some of his songs are fantastic, but seriously, they’re dated, too, but his voice — that’s what made these women gush and turn up the volume. The guy didn’t have rock hard abs, and as an old guy, he wasn’t exactly sexy. And yet, he could have stolen the attention of these young ladies by uttering just a few words. Of course, June held his heart, but the point remains.

I Am Your Father

James Earl Jones has a rich, deep voice, and way back when he embodied Darth Vader like no one else could. Check out the scene on YouTube. By contrast, listen to Luke’s shrill, high-pitched response, “That’s not true. That’s impossible!”

Then there’s Vin Diesel of Fast & Furious fame. Think he could have made it as an action star with a weak voice? Not hardly. Here’s some everyday conversation with Jimmy Kimmel:

How about Joey’s infamous “How you doin?” line for the ladies? He drops his voice down a note or two for it, certainly. Great fun:

For the ultimate in deep-voiced crooners, country singer Josh Turner has a crazy bass — and he knows how to use it. For instance, in his “Firecracker” — on YouTube — he starts off with a deep growling “Yeeeaaaahhh”. Enough to make women swoon and many a man jealous. Just look at the comments:

“that voice would get any girl in the world!”

“His voice produces moans from girls everywhere XD!!”

“mm i love his deep country voice..its like velvet ;)

And of course, his popular hit, “Would You Go With Me” is just dripping with the deep voice action.

As it turns out, Turner may have been born with a freakishly deep voice, but it’s not all genetics. According to Wikipedia, while he attended Belmont University, he went through a classical training vocal program.

So even a guy like Turner spent some time learning to use his voice.

What I’m Going For

I’m not sure where my current speaking voice is compared to your average man, but I’m guessing it’s somewhere in the middle. What I do know is that I can drop it down a bit to good effect, but I have very little control over it. As I said, it’s mostly instinctual or used for fun. What I’d like to do is get my normal speaking voice down just a bit — nothing too wild. For instance, Turner’s is far too deep. I’d say an ideal goal is to find a deep resonance that doesn’t draw too much attention, something that is almost subliminally appealing, yet won’t break someone out of the moment you happen to be in.

How far can I get in a just a few weeks?
