Chalk It Up: Names

Ever have someone tell you their name and then seconds later you realize you've already forgotten it?
I’VE GOT A NEW PROJECT to put on The Better Man Plan list: names. As in, remember them, don’t forget them. Half the time I meet someone new, I can lose their name within seconds. If the person is a hot chick, sure, I remember the name easily. But a regular guy? Maybe, maybe not.
Obviously, this isn’t particularly good for business, for social networking in the real world, and it can lead to those awkward moments when you kind of know someone but have no idea what their name is, so you end up saying, “Oh, hey guy, how’s it going?”
Yeah. Sad.
Just recently, a new guy started playing ball — big guy, 260 or so, lots of muscle, little shorter than me, but he knew how to post up. We guarded each other. Lots of good clean hard work. The guy told me his name twice — once with a handshake before the games and then again after because I asked him.
As I walked away the second time, I hadn’t gone 15 paces before I realized I’d already forgotten. Was it John? Or Dave? Robert maybe?
Yeah, I need a strategy.
Names are just the begining for memory. If you can’t remember details in discussions you don’t have a chance at the family level let alone the business level.
